A Nutritionist Weighs in...

Local produce tends to taste better and is fresher, but it seems unnecessary to eliminate certain fruits and vegetables (including mango, pineapple, asparagus, spinach, and avocado) because they are not natural to our environment. Unless you believe in the "science" behind the do's and don'ts of this diet, you will most likely find yourself frustrated trying to follow all of the guidelines.

Choose The Macrobiotic Diet to change your life, not your weight

The Macrobiotic Diet is for someone who believes or wants to believe in the philosophy behind the diet. To follow this diet, you must do more than just change a few food habits. It requires that you completely change your lifestyle - what you eat, how you cook, and where you shop. This plan would be rather difficult to follow, especially if you eat out or travel often.

If you are the cook for your family, you may find that it's difficult to get them to eat the recommended foods. It may also be troubling to discover how much money you are spending on your new way of life. If you are looking to shed some extra pounds, you will find no help here. This plan suggests a way of eating that is certainly not solely aimed at just losing weight.

Diet Pros Diet Cons
  • No calorie counting
  • Encourages healthy foods
  • Encourages environmental consciousness

  • Requires a lifestyle change
  • Many restricted foods
  • "Way of Life Suggestions" may be hard to follow
  • Requires special cooking methods
  • Regular exercise not really stressed
  • Difficult to eat out and travel
