A Nutritionist Weighs in...

Overall, this diet is well balanced and allows you to eat most of the foods you enjoy. I like that it sets reasonable lifetime goals to focus on one week at a time, unlike a crash diet that you will cheat on in a few weeks. Exercise is strongly encouraged with reasonable goals for physical activity, so that you can slowly make changes to incorporate them into your lifestyle. Although tracking your food intake seems like a cruel punishment, it can be a good tool to use in order to learn about your own food habits and where you may need to improve.

Be sure to check out the Washington Post Web site where you can chat and discuss nutrition with Sally Squires and subscribe to her free e-newsletter, which provides tips and recipes.

There's no magic bullet in this plan, but that may allow you to stay on it for the long term

The Lean Plate Club is a practical and reasonable plan to follow since there are no food restrictions. It may be tedious, however, to measure and record your food intake. For some people, this will simply never happen. If you can be diligent about what you eat and not let yourself go overboard with sweets, then you will not find following this diet too unreasonable.

Traveling, eating out, and including your family are all reasonable options on this plan since you can eat real food. As far as portion sizes go, you will have to eyeball your servings when dining out and plan to leave with a doggie bag.
