A Nutritionist Weighs in...

Dr. Arnot's diet provides some good eating recommendations and interesting scientific details on weight control. But that doesn't make it a simple plan to follow. It lacks easy-to-follow guidelines and clear explanations of portions. The book is painfully slow reading, but it does offer many helpful recommendations for eating and exercise that will keep you healthy in the long-run.

If you can stick with beans and exercise, this diet's for you

Dr. Arnot's diet is full of helpful weight control tips, but where should you begin? It's clear that you'll need to commit yourself to eating beans and whole grains, and adding exercise to your daily life. You are unlikely to ever feel hungry if you follow this plan.

This plan offers no specific weight loss expectations. Many of us like to know how much or how quickly we should be losing weight. We use weight loss to check our progress and see whether or not a program is working. Without any guidelines, how can you know if you are succeeding?

The meal plan is confusing. Some food items are listed as both good choices and not-so-good choices. You'll need to memorize all the hard foods - or walk around with a list. For some, this may be an improvement on counting calories all the time.

Could you just move to China, eat the local cuisine, and keep your weight loss? Dr. Bob Arnot seems to think so. This maintenance plan may be the most unrealistic aspect of the program.

Diet Pros Diet Cons
  • No calorie counting
  • Promotes exercise
  • No pressure to lose weight at a certain rate
  • Food charts detailing high-fiber, high- bulk foods are useful in helping to choose healthy foods
  • Appropriate portions of foods are not very detailed
  • Confusing and hard-to-follow plan
  • Maintenance plan does not provide much guidance and may not be reasonable for many people
  • The book is challenging to read and provides few recipes
  • No specific weight loss guidelines
